Rockcastle County students brought Kentucky’s rich cultural traditions to life during a vibrant Kentucky Heritage Day celebration. The event highlighted the creativity and knowledge of 4th through 8th grade GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) students as they proudly showcased their original heritage-based projects.
Attendees explored a wide range of student work, including:
Hand-sewn quilts reflecting traditional patterns and family stories
Intricate basket weaving displays crafted with care
Corn husk dolls inspired by early Appalachian traditions
Custom-built birdhouses designed to encourage native wildlife
Handmade pins promoting awareness of monarch butterfly conservation
Creative rocket lanterns symbolizing Rockcastle pride
Thoughtful portrait galleries featuring notable Kentuckians and family ancestors
Original heritage poems capturing the heart and history of the region
In addition to the student showcases, live demonstrations and interactive activities helped connect families and community members to Kentucky’s history and conservation efforts in hands-on, meaningful ways.
A special shoutout goes to Starla Benge, Gifted & Talented Coordinator, for her vision, planning, and dedication in bringing this celebration to life. Her hard work and leadership made it possible for students to shine and for the community to experience such a powerful and creative tribute to Kentucky’s heritage.
Kentucky Heritage Day served as a celebration of tradition, learning, and innovation—reminding all who attended of the importance of honoring our roots while inspiring future generations to grow, create, and lead with purpose.
